Designer Minds is a South African enterprise driven to provide quality handmade products of value and artistic expression..

Designer Minds became a priority and necessity for me to establish and to try fulfill a dream i had for an outlet that will carry unique handmade items.. Preferably items that had not been done before..

This concept was dropped in my spirit around 1986 and today the idea and concept excites me even more than when it first came to me…

I knew it would require strong foundations and platforms to be set in place for individuals to be able to manufacture and for Designer Minds to establish marketing and points of sale with an infrastructure to cover the globe for sales, deliveries and awareness etc… I wanted to do all this as a front runner for others to follow and also become independent self sufficient and potential employers themselves…

In 2003 I finally had a second product I believed would take me there as I had started with my sponge roller concept Curly Whirls and Curl Maker spray in December 1999… So I introduced my hand crafted metal Comb which I perfected from a plastic comb that I had been selling since 2002 …

My older comb was based on a 30 year old concept of joining two combs together by means of a fabric – covered elasticized members… But now my new comb had a scientific spacing of the teeth to eliminate any hair slicing that may happen…An instant leader in the field …

With my background in hairdressing I was inspired to create a South African version from this aged old concept as well as creating many new hairstyles using the “Twirl Comb” concept now being handmade by me from wire…

In 2005 I faced a lot of opposition and legal matters and decided to rebrand my Twirl Comb as de Jure Twirl Comb a Latin word know in law as “my right”. After winning the law suits in 2007 I re branded again as the Up-Itz Twirl Comb which I later changed again to Uppity Twirl Comb in about 2010 and know I find myself with the same dream as in 1986 ready to bring to market my tried and tested and loved products that have served me so well all these years, and helped me sustain many artisans over the years..

So now with a brand new name, a brand new look and with fun and successful platforms now available to me .. I bring to you Charlene’s Hair Combs… Knowing my product has stood the test of time I can proudly put my name on it… My wonderful product of quality and excellence and all individually crafted to the weaver’s artistic interpretation… I now present you with the best of the best Twirl Combs on the market … from our hands to yours made with love Out of Africa….

Today a few copy cats have jumped on board using galvanized wire and other inferior wires…some have reversed engineered my comb which is just a fancy way to say opportunist are even found in the hair comb market place, but thankfully they don’t make my full range which available in 5 sizes, nor do they copy and sell my Royal and X-cite designs, which consist of three combs being joined by elastic beaded member…

I will soon have my Angle wing combs available too…and a brand new clasp come slide come clip… hair comb I just know you will all love to have and use .. Like all I do it too will come from our hands to yours from out of Africa…
